New Delhi: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today accused the companies that supply power to Delhi of "blackmail" after one of them warned of power cuts starting tomorrow that could last 8-10 hours in Central and East Delhi.
Mr Kejriwal said if that happens, their licenses could be cancelled.
The three power companies that operate in Delhi have for years said that they are losing money because they have been forced to provide electricity at below-market rates.
Now, they say are running out of money to pay the state-run companies who actually generate the power that is then distributed by the private firms.
BSES is one of Delhi's three distribution companies and is backed by billionaire Anil Ambani's Reliance Infra. It told the government yesterday that it has hit a cash crunch and will be forced to exercise power cuts. A government-owned power generation firm, NTPC, has said it cannot supply power to BSES till it receives payments that are long over-due. The NTPC says that the discom owes it Rs. 84 crore.
Mr Kejriwal, who took over as chief minister of Delhi last month, wants the three power companies to be audited; he has alleged that in collaboration with the earlier Congress government, they have fudged their accounts to show losses.
Within days of taking over as chief minister, Mr Kejriwal announced that electricity rates would be halved starting January 1, 2014 till March 31, 2014.
He has said that his cabinet would take a fresh call on the power rates after the national auditor completes its inspection of the private firms' accounts.
