While posing for our photographer, he kept telling him, "Bas, ek pose aur. Baki pictures andar kheench lenge." Delhi boy Sidharth Malhotra, who now calls Mumbai his home, finds it difficult to stand Dilli ki sardi. On his recent trip to the city, to promote his upcoming movie Hasee Toh Phasee, he spoke about his Delhi memories, friends, co-stars and much more... 

Coming back to Delhi

This is my city and will always be. It's always amazing to come back here and spend time with my family and friends, but unfortunately I hardly get to do that anymore. Delhi is perfect for a quick holiday and it offers a lot of open spaces for sports, which is lacking in Mumbai. I played basketball as a teenager, then rugby, and more recently football (in Student Of The Year). I would love to play with a bunch of friends in a park, but we don't have enough space in Mumbai.

I was welcomed well because I did Karan Johar's film

We all, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and me, made our entry in Bollywood with a Karan Johar film, and people were quite welcoming and warm because of him. I'm sure the first introduction is critical, and it does depend on who introduces you to this part of the world. Since Karan mentored me, it turned out to be good.

Friends in the film industry

Among the younger actors, be it Arjun Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan, all of them are very friendly. We all get along very well, meet at each other's birthdays. Varun, Alia and I have had the same journey, so obviously I'm very friendly with them. All in all, the younger lot is far more easy-going and chilled out.

Delhi University days

During my college days in Bhagat Singh College, I had a lot of fun. Saket used to be hang-out place. My friends and me would go there, binge on snacks and watch movies. Mutliplexes were a new concept then, so it was doubly exciting.

Saare paise petrol pe jaate thay

Till my first year, I was restricted to Bhagat Singh, but in the second year, when I got my own car, the whole city became our hang-out spot. I blew all my pocket money on petrol.

Delhi and its street food

Delhi mein hum logon ka culture kaafi achcha hai. The cafe culture here is very different from Mumbai. We have a lot of places to go to here. And more now, than what we had when I was in college, about seven to eight years ago. The street food that is available here, can never be found in Mumbai.

Everybody wants to become an assistant director after Varun and me did it

For me, to assist a director was very important because I had zero awareness of what goes on the sets. The technicalities are very important to understand the nuances of acting better, but it's not easy. Now everyone wants to be become an assistant director, after they saw Varun and me do it, but I did it because I genuinely wanted to learn.

Second movie has more pressure than the first

During my first movie, I was spoon-fed, but this time things were very different. Vinil Mathew, director, Hasee Toh Phasee, is totally different to work with. I realized how spoilt I was on the sets of SOTY. This time, I was on my toes the whole time. Also, this is my solo film. I don't have Varun to share the screen space. The responsibility is definitely more. Also, here I was suddenly a film-old whereas the director was a newcomer. It was completely different than what it was three years ago.

Parineeti and Alia are different personalities altogether

They are very different from each other. Both are amazing actors. Alia and I started our careers together. We've had some great experiences. And a lot of our firsts together - first day of shoot, first release, first copy, so she will always hold a special place. We have a great bond and that will always be. Parineeti and and I met as actors, but we hit it off really well. We have a lot in common. We both are outsiders in Mumbai and both of us are Punjabis. She speaks Punjabi really well and I understand it, so I think both of us bonded well because of these similarities.

Parineeti is a natural actor, but I was not intimidated

Parineeti is a natural actor, but not to take any credit away from her, she works only if the film works and the same goes for me. The films she did were good.

He's a 'senti' man in real life as well

My character in Hasee Toh Phasee is in a way, similar to what I am in real life. It is a sentimental one and I'm like that in real life as well. I'm a very emotional person.
