Bank of India today became the first state-run lender to allow withdrawal of funds from its ATMs without a debit card.

The public sector bank has launched a domestic remittance service called 'Instant Money Transfer (IMT)' that allows card-less cash withdrawal from it select ATMs which are tuned for this facility.

Last month, RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan had said that individuals without a bank account will soon be able to receive money from those with bank accounts, using automated teller machines (ATM).

The IMT facility allows a customer to send money to a receiver only by using the receiver's mobile number through the bank's ATM or using internet banking facility. The receiver may withdraw money from designated BoI ATMs without using a debit card.

The receiver would receive partial details for cash withdrawal on mobile phones.

"This service is in line with the RBI's expectation of expanding financial inclusion, wherein fund transfer can happen from account holders to those without accounts through ATMs," BoI Chairperson and Managing Director V R Iyer told reporters here.

Iyer said that some of ATMs are already being made ITM-enabled and the rest will be enabled in 20 days. With this facility, a beneficiary can withdraw up to Rs. 25,000 through IMT transaction on monthly basis while per transaction limit is set up Rs. 10,000.

The sender will be charged of IMT fee of Rs. 25 for every transaction.

Iyer said bank has added 2,100 ATMs in the current fiscal and its total network of ATMs stands at 4,000 as of today. The bank will be adding 100 more ATMs in this week, she said.

Gold prices rose more than 1 per cent, while Brent and US crude oil rallied to multi-month highs on Monday on escalating geopolitical tensions as Ukraine mobilised for war after Russia bloodlessly seized Crimea, an isolated Black Sea peninsula where Moscow has a naval base.

However, riskier assets such as stocks fell across the globe. The BSE Sensex fell 0.06 per cent while broader Nifty was down 0.13 per cent as of 10.35 a.m., posting smaller declines than in the rest of the region. Japan's Nikkei average traded 1.4 per cent lower.

Commodity prices tend to rise in conflict situations, so the current rally in gold and crude prices is no different, analysts said.

Jim Rogers, chairman of Rogers Holdings told NDTV that war is not good for any asset except commodity prices.

"If we have a war, commodity prices will go up, but I expect things to cool down," he added.

Russia is the world's biggest oil producer and Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said Moscow's move to use military force was a "declaration of war".

Putin secured permission from his parliament on Saturday to use military force to protect Russian citizens in Ukraine and told US President Barack Obama he had the right to defend Russian interests and nationals, spurning Western pleas not to intervene.

Brent crude hit a session peak of $111.24 per barrel, its highest since January 2. Cash and US gold futures hit an intraday high around $1,345 an ounce.

"I think there's short-term support for gold because of the turmoil. I am looking to find out whether it will break a previous high of $1,361.60 touched in October last year," said Joyce Liu, investment analyst at Phillip Futures in Singapore.

In India, the most actively traded gold contract was up 1 per cent at Rs. 30,618 per 10 gram.

It's got four wheels and seatbelts, but Bajaj Auto, the creator of India's first quadricycle, would rather you didn't call it a car.

Bajaj Auto is marketing the RE60 as a more stable and comfortable alternative to the three-wheeled autorickshaws ubiquitous on India's roads even though it looks like a small hatchback car and is expected to cost less.

Weight, top speed and other specifications, including safety standards, mean the RE60 will not be classified as a car. But that didn't stop executives from top automakers such as Tata Motors from comparing it to a car and finding its safety features come up short.

Rajiv Bajaj, the company's managing director, insists the RE60 is neither a car nor an autorickshaw. The government is even creating a new classification category for the vehicle, which is expected to be launched within months.

"In every market that a three-wheeler is available the quadricycle should be relevant," Mr Bajaj told Reuters in a phone interview.

"Because at the end of the day it provides a very logical upgrade from a three-wheeler for people who want to pay a little more and want to have the comfort and safety of four wheels, four doors, a roof and seatbelts," he said.

In India, autorickshaws typically have no doors and a soft roof. The vehicles are usually turned into taxis and known in many countries as tuk-tuks.

The RE60 is part of a long-term expansion strategy by Bajaj to boost sales growth at home and abroad.

The company is the world's largest autorickshaw maker and India's second largest motorcycle maker, and sales of both these vehicles have decelerated over the last two years, hit by falling demand in a slowing economy.

Bajaj's three-wheeler sales fell 6 per cent in the 2012/13 financial year compared to a 17 per cent increase in the previous year and a 28 per cent rise in 2010/11.

Motorcycle sales also showed a similar trend: they fell 2 per cent in 2012/13 compared to a 13.2 per cent gain in 2011/12 and a 35 per cent increase a year earlier.

Exports of motorbikes and autorickshaws account for more than a third of Bajaj's sales. The company counts Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, TVS Motor Company Ltd and Italy's Piaggio as competitors in the three-wheeler segment.

Safer, but not cheaper

The RE60 weighs 400 kilograms (880 pounds), about 100 kg more than Bajaj's smallest autorickshaw and half as much as a small hatchback. The engine, which can run on gasoline or compressed natural gas, goes up to 70 kilometres per hour (about 40 miles per hour).

The vehicle is likely to be priced between an autorickshaw and a small car. Analysts expect the RE60 to cost Rs. 200,000, more than the roughly Rs. 150,000 for the most basic Bajaj three-wheeler but less than the Rs. 270,000 for India's bestselling car, the Maruti Alto hatchback.

Bajaj spent Rs. 550 crore developing the vehicle, according to media reports. The company can initially make up to 5,000 vehicles a month and has been waiting for two years to get them on India's roads.

The federal government is expected to allow quadricycles from October 1.

Bajaj hopes the quadricycles will catch on in countries where three-wheelers are widespread, and has sent samples for test runs in Sri Lanka, Colombia and Kenya. Managing director Bajaj, however, declined to give any sales forecasts.

Analysts said quadricycles are likely to have broader appeal than the autorickshaws.

"Specifically, in cities in the next three to four years it could replace the three-wheeler, primarily because it provides better safety, as well as comfort as well as better fuel efficiency when compared to three-wheelers," said Nitesh Sharma, an analyst with brokerage Espirito Santo Securities.

Finance Minister P Chidambaram reading out his budget speech in Parliament

Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Monday presented the interim budget for the fiscal year 2014-15 to cover expenditure until the government's term ends in May.

"Our objectives were fiscal consolidation, reviving growth cycle, and enhancing manufacturing", Mr Chidambaram said.
The biggest highlight of Mr Chidambaram's speech was the announcement on fiscal deficit. The finance minister said the government will curtail its 2013-14 fiscal deficit to 4.6 per cent of GDP, lower than the red line at 4.8 per cent he drew in the last budget. India's fiscal deficit will come down to 3 per cent of GDP by 2016-17, Mr Chidambaram added.

Mr Chidambaram also announced that India's current account deficit for 2013-14 will come down to $45 billion and forex reserves will rise by $15 billion by end of the current fiscal.

Sajjid Chinoy, India economist at JP Morgan told NDTV that the finance minister has shown admirable fiscal restraint and the interim budget is positive in the near term.

India's deficit is the highest among the BRIC nations and a breach of the red line would have led to a downgrade by ratings agencies, which Indian cannot afford at a time when it is growing at the slowest pace in a decade. The finance minister rolled over fuel subsidy worth Rs. 35,000 crore in 2014-15 to meet the deficit target.

"The subsidy payment roll over was along expected lines, so no incremental negative surprise. Overall, one could say that it's largely a non-event budget," Shubhada Rao of Yes Bank said.

Mr Chidambaram raised the spending to Rs. 2.24 lakh crore in 2014-15, up 10 per cent year on year, but kept the plan expenditure for the next fiscal at the same level as previous year. The non-plan spending may rise to about Rs. 12.08 lakh crore in 2014-15, Mr Chidambaram added.

Food, fertilizer and fuel subsidy for 2014-15 is seen at 2.46 lakh crore, slightly more than 2.45 lakh crore in 2013-14, Mr Chidambaram said. Fuel subsidy is pegged at Rs. 65,000 crore, while food subsidy is seen at Rs. 1.15 lakh crore in 2014-15, Mr Chidambaram added.

In good news for consumers, Mr Chidambaram cut excise duty on small cars and two-wheelers from 12 per cent 8 per cent. The cut in duty will be applicable up to June 20, 2014, when the new government is likely to present the full year budget. He also cut duty on consumer durables from 12 per cent to 10 per cent.

Mr Chidambaram's duty-cut is aimed to spur domestic manufacturing at a time when India's economy is growing at the slowest pace in a decade. Industrial output has fallen 0.1 per cent in the first nine months of the current fiscal year, and annual car sales declined by about 5 per cent in 2013.

Ahead of elections, Mr Chidambaram also announced a subsidy scheme on education loans taken before March 31, 2009, a move which will help 9 lakh students.

Analysts told NDTV that Mr Chidambaram's interim budget was on expected line and the government's fiscal math is likely to cheer markets.

Ms Rao said the finance minister refrained from populist announcements and the budget has proposed a few measures to support investments and consumption by cutting excise duty.

"Clarity on fiscal deficit and government's borrowing program is a greater positive. Now we have a roadmap on government borrowing, we were earlier thinking it to be about Rs. 6.30 lakh crore and what has come is much better than expectations. This is positive for equities," Aneesh Srivastava of IDBI Federal Life Insurance told Reuters.

Markets were range bound. The BSE Sensex traded 52 points or 0.25 per cent higher at 20,419, while the broader Nifty traded up 13 points at 6,061 as of 1.08 p.m. (Track stocks)

Mr Chidambaram's speech was repeatedly disrupted by protests over the proposed division of Andhra Pradesh.

Greater Noida: India's car market leader Maruti Suzuki India today unveiled two concept models - sedan Ciaz and crossover SX4 S-Cross -- as it looks to enhance its position in the bigger sedan segment going forward.

Amid a slowdown in the market, the company said it was looking to achieve sales it had in last fiscal year in 2013-14.

"The SX4 S-Cross and Ciaz are models to expand our product range in future," Maruti Suzuki India managing director and CEO Kenichi Ayukawa told reporters here at the Auto Expo.z
Expressing optimism about the Indian market, he said in the last 30 years since its inception, MSI has sold 12 million vehicles but it covered only one per cent of the country. "We have the other 99 per cent to cover," Mr Ayukawa said.

Shares in Biocon slumped after earnings disappointed some investors.

Biocon said on Wednesday its December-quarter consolidated net profit rose 14 percent to R
s.
 105 crore.
Some analysts cited disappointment over operating margins, with Kotak Institutional Equities expressing concerns about research and development margins.
"R&D margin at 2.9 per cent is the lowest in the past several quarters, which raises concerns on sustainability of the margin improvement," it said in a report.
Investors are also locking profits after the stock jumped 8.5 per cent in the previous three sessions.
Biocon shares were trading down 5.2 per cent at 3 p.m.

The BSE Sensex hit a second consecutive record closing high on Thursday after Larsen & Toubro surged as its quarterly profit margins beat expectations, although falls in rate-sensitive auto makers prevented broader gains.

Indian shares have been flirting with record highs since late last year, driven largely by heavy buying of blue chip exporters by foreign investors, worth $20 billion in 2013.

However, a slew of uncertainties are clouding the outlook, including general elections due by May, U.S. Federal Reserve tapering, and more recently, a recommendation from the central bank to overhaul monetary policy.

"Overall the market remains sceptical, mainly on macro concerns. Though market participants remain confident about growth, the political situation is worrying. We are cautiously optimistic in the medium term," said Deven Choksey, managing director at KR Choksey Securities.

"We expect RBI to come back to the growth stand rather than controlling inflation, and we need to wait and watch that."

As part of those recommendations, the Reserve Bank of India wants to prioritise taming high consumer inflation, raising the prospect of higher interest rates and, thus, concerns ahead of its policy review on Tuesday.

The benchmark BSE Sensex rose 0.17 per cent to a record closing high of 21,373.66, still below an all-time high of 21,483.74 hit on December 9.

The broader Nifty gained 0.11 per cent to 6,345.65, just short of its record closing high of 6,363.90 hit on December 9.

Foreign investors have remained buyers of Indian shares this year, with net purchases totalling 24.41 billion rupees so far.

Larsen & Toubro rose 2.8 percent after the company's October-December margins beat estimates, while other engineering firms such as Bharat Heavy Electricals gained 0.74 per cent.

Shares in Raymond closed up 1.08 per cent after the textiles maker reported late on Wednesday a more than four-fold increase in its October-December quarter net profit.

However, rate-sensitive auto makers fell on worries that higher interest rates would curb sales by making financing vehicles more expensive.

Mahindra & Mahindra fell 2.88 per cent and Tata Motors dropped 0.65 per cent.

Shares in gold retailers, including Titan Co and Gitanjali Gems, rose sharply after ruling Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi wrote to the federal government for a cut in the record import duty on gold.

Shares in Biocon and KPIT Technologies fell after earnings disappointed some investors.
