Bank of India today became the first state-run lender to allow withdrawal of funds from its ATMs without a debit card.

The public sector bank has launched a domestic remittance service called 'Instant Money Transfer (IMT)' that allows card-less cash withdrawal from it select ATMs which are tuned for this facility.

Last month, RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan had said that individuals without a bank account will soon be able to receive money from those with bank accounts, using automated teller machines (ATM).

The IMT facility allows a customer to send money to a receiver only by using the receiver's mobile number through the bank's ATM or using internet banking facility. The receiver may withdraw money from designated BoI ATMs without using a debit card.

The receiver would receive partial details for cash withdrawal on mobile phones.

"This service is in line with the RBI's expectation of expanding financial inclusion, wherein fund transfer can happen from account holders to those without accounts through ATMs," BoI Chairperson and Managing Director V R Iyer told reporters here.

Iyer said that some of ATMs are already being made ITM-enabled and the rest will be enabled in 20 days. With this facility, a beneficiary can withdraw up to Rs. 25,000 through IMT transaction on monthly basis while per transaction limit is set up Rs. 10,000.

The sender will be charged of IMT fee of Rs. 25 for every transaction.

Iyer said bank has added 2,100 ATMs in the current fiscal and its total network of ATMs stands at 4,000 as of today. The bank will be adding 100 more ATMs in this week, she said.

NEW DELHI:  Google doodles became a staple of the net, celebrating notable achievements, individuals and inventions, along side vital days in history. however a ladies activist cluster, Spark Movement, has suspect Google of creating sexist doodles.

Spark Movement, which incorporates a 17-year-old student of Indian origin, has free a report that highlights the under-representation of ladies by Google in its doodles.

The cluster has compiled a report supported the information of over last four years (2010 to 2013), that shows that the net big created 445 doodles throughout the amount. Out of those, solely seventy three were of ladies, whereas 357 were of men.
It has additionally drawn illation that the Google doodles square measure racist. cardinal of the doodles on orconcerning females were for white ladies, whereas the remaining nineteen were for 'women of colour', the report reveals. The inequality is even additional stark among doodles for men, wherever white males got associate"overwhelming" 275 doodles, solely eighty two were dedicated to men of color.

The report says, "This makes 2013 the primary year that celebrated a girl of color with a world Doodle (doodle seen across the planet on all Google home pages), that is essentially the best honour that Google offers to historical figures". this can be a relevancy the doodle dedicated to singer.

Interestingly, Google has been defendant of this once it's going to air a course correction path. As concerning1/2 the nineteen doodles for 'women of colour' came in 2013 itself. However, there still hasn't been one Asian, Latina or autochthonic lady featured during a world Doodle till Gregorian calendar month 2014, in line withthe report.

Google is that the info centre of the planet and it's presenting a skew and unbalanced vision of UN agencycreates data, defendant executive of Spark Movement, Dana Edell.

The cluster has place up a web petition to Google on modification.org to "to be additional numerous in itsillustration of the world's historical figures and attempt to partnering with North American nation as they're going forward therewith effort." As a part of this initiative, Spark Movement has compiled a listing of ladies UN agency be doodles, in order that "Google needs to do less analysis."

Despite its plea, the cluster has acknowledged that Google has improved gender illustration over the years.

"About 0.5 the doodles in January we have a tendency tore dedicated to ladies — a couple of those that we had on our list of amazing historical heroes even got doodled. And by celebrating 5 ladies of color in the primary2 months of this year, there have already been additional ladies of color in 2014 than there have been in 2010, 2011 and 2012," admitted the report.

The group, however, attributes this modification - a minimum of partially - to folks like Ann M Martin, a science pedagogue UN agency has been pursuit gender in Google doodles qualitative analysis back to 2001.

According to Fox News, Google's team lead for doodles, Ryan Germick, aforesaid that girls have traditionallybeen under-represented in most fields: science, faculty curricula, business, politics and, sadly, doodles. However, headded that the corporate was already operating to enhance the doodle gender imbalance.

It's got four wheels and seatbelts, but Bajaj Auto, the creator of India's first quadricycle, would rather you didn't call it a car.

Bajaj Auto is marketing the RE60 as a more stable and comfortable alternative to the three-wheeled autorickshaws ubiquitous on India's roads even though it looks like a small hatchback car and is expected to cost less.

Weight, top speed and other specifications, including safety standards, mean the RE60 will not be classified as a car. But that didn't stop executives from top automakers such as Tata Motors from comparing it to a car and finding its safety features come up short.

Rajiv Bajaj, the company's managing director, insists the RE60 is neither a car nor an autorickshaw. The government is even creating a new classification category for the vehicle, which is expected to be launched within months.

"In every market that a three-wheeler is available the quadricycle should be relevant," Mr Bajaj told Reuters in a phone interview.

"Because at the end of the day it provides a very logical upgrade from a three-wheeler for people who want to pay a little more and want to have the comfort and safety of four wheels, four doors, a roof and seatbelts," he said.

In India, autorickshaws typically have no doors and a soft roof. The vehicles are usually turned into taxis and known in many countries as tuk-tuks.

The RE60 is part of a long-term expansion strategy by Bajaj to boost sales growth at home and abroad.

The company is the world's largest autorickshaw maker and India's second largest motorcycle maker, and sales of both these vehicles have decelerated over the last two years, hit by falling demand in a slowing economy.

Bajaj's three-wheeler sales fell 6 per cent in the 2012/13 financial year compared to a 17 per cent increase in the previous year and a 28 per cent rise in 2010/11.

Motorcycle sales also showed a similar trend: they fell 2 per cent in 2012/13 compared to a 13.2 per cent gain in 2011/12 and a 35 per cent increase a year earlier.

Exports of motorbikes and autorickshaws account for more than a third of Bajaj's sales. The company counts Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, TVS Motor Company Ltd and Italy's Piaggio as competitors in the three-wheeler segment.

Safer, but not cheaper

The RE60 weighs 400 kilograms (880 pounds), about 100 kg more than Bajaj's smallest autorickshaw and half as much as a small hatchback. The engine, which can run on gasoline or compressed natural gas, goes up to 70 kilometres per hour (about 40 miles per hour).

The vehicle is likely to be priced between an autorickshaw and a small car. Analysts expect the RE60 to cost Rs. 200,000, more than the roughly Rs. 150,000 for the most basic Bajaj three-wheeler but less than the Rs. 270,000 for India's bestselling car, the Maruti Alto hatchback.

Bajaj spent Rs. 550 crore developing the vehicle, according to media reports. The company can initially make up to 5,000 vehicles a month and has been waiting for two years to get them on India's roads.

The federal government is expected to allow quadricycles from October 1.

Bajaj hopes the quadricycles will catch on in countries where three-wheelers are widespread, and has sent samples for test runs in Sri Lanka, Colombia and Kenya. Managing director Bajaj, however, declined to give any sales forecasts.

Analysts said quadricycles are likely to have broader appeal than the autorickshaws.

"Specifically, in cities in the next three to four years it could replace the three-wheeler, primarily because it provides better safety, as well as comfort as well as better fuel efficiency when compared to three-wheelers," said Nitesh Sharma, an analyst with brokerage Espirito Santo Securities.

Harley Davidson has launched Street 750, its first made in India bike at Rs. 4.10 lakh at the Auto Expo. The Street 750 will be the cheapest Harley Davidson bike in the Indian market. Bookings for the Street 750 will start from March 1, 2014, the company said.

This is the first bike from Harley's all-new platform in 13 years. The niche bike maker also plans to launch another bike called Street 500 based on the same platform.

The Street 750 establishes Harley Davidson's step into a lower displacement realm than it has operated in so far.

First bike outside US:

For the first time in Harley Davidson's history, this product will be manufactured outside the United States. So far Harley Davidson has only had assembly operations outside the US - in India and Brazil. But the Street will be made from the ground-up in India and also in Kansas City, US.
While the Kansas City production will cater only to the North American market, the Indian plant in Bawal, Haryana will supply to the local market and also to Europe. The number of export markets will gradually scale up over the next 2-3 year period.

New York:  As Facebook celebrates its 10th anniversary, the world's biggest social network is finding its path as a maturing company, adapting to an aging user base.

The company created in a Harvard dorm room in 2004 has established itself as a phenomenon, securing its place in the world of the technology giants.

"Facebook has made the world much smaller, much more interactive," said Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry.

"Facebook started the social revolution but it may not be able to control it."

In its short history, Facebook has become a part of daily life for more than a billion people around the globe.

Co-founder Mark Zuckerberg described the mission as "making the world more open and connected," and some say he has accomplished just that.

"More than 20 per cent of all time spent on the Internet is spent on Facebook," says Lou Kerner, founder of the Social Internet Fund.

Yet in some ways, Facebook could be the victim of its own success.

Its initial core base of teens and university students has expanded, and Facebook is now widely used by people in all age groups.

Facebook says it has a global total of 1.23 billion monthly active users, including 945 million who use the social network on a mobile device. But some analysts note that Facebook has to shift strategy for an aging user base.

An iStrategyLabs study of US Facebook users found a 25 per cent drop in the number of users in the 13-17 age group, along with an 80 per cent jump in the number of users over 55.

"People joke that for the teen, Facebook isn't cool when your mom is on it," Kerner said. "I think it's not even your mom any more, now it's also your grandmother."

The research firm Social Bakers says its data shows teens are a big and still-growing part of Facebook.

"The 18-24 year-old age group is still the largest," said the group's Ben Harper.

"Our data shows the growth of audience and interactions on Facebook, and while teens are undoubtedly using multiple platforms (as we all are), they are also sticking with Facebook."

In the United States, Facebook is used by 71 per cent of all adults who are on the Internet, or 57 per cent of the adult population, according to the Pew Research Center.

Pew found that while Facebook is used by 89 percent of online adults in the 18-29 age group, it is also used by 60 per cent in the 50-64 age category and 45 per cent of those over 65.

Facebook is maturing as a company as well. It had a calamitous initial public offering in May 2012 plagued by technical glitches, and saw its share price slump by half, but has been on a roll for the past year, with its stock hitting record highs.

Facebook has reassured its investors it can generate advertising revenue, particularly in the mobile segment used by an increasing number of members.

Facebook reported its profit for the full year 2013 jumped to $1.5 billion from just $53 million in 2012, and revenues increased to $7.87 billion from $5.1 billion.

According to the research firm eMarketer, Facebook has become the second-largest recipient of digital advertising spending behind Google, and is particularly strong in mobile ads.

"Facebook appears the best way to play the social Internet," Morgan Stanley analysts said in a note to clients, preferring Facebook to the up-and-coming network Twitter.

Some analysts point out that Facebook's appeal to grownups is a big part of maturation, and represents the key to generating revenue and profit.

"Advertisers place promotional content on Facebook for one reason only - to generate sales," said analysts at the research firm Trefis.

"The vast majority of purchases made online come from users of ages 25 and above. One study suggests it is as high as 85 percent. With these figures in mind, the decline in users ages 13-24 becomes almost irrelevant."

Kerner note that being "cool" is not necessarily Facebook's long-term goal.

"You can't be the cool place forever," he told AFP.

"One of two things happen to companies when they're done being cool. They either go away, or they transition to becoming more of a utility. And Facebook is very successfully doing the latter."

In what would be a first in the annals of top-level international headhunting, two Indian-origin tech whizzes are said to be in contention to lead Microsoft.

Close on the heels of news that the Microsoft board has almost settled on insider Satya Nadella as CEO to replace Steve Ballmer, a tech blog caused a flutter on Friday by reporting that the hiring team is also talking to Sundar Pichai, who heads Google's Chrome and apps division, and who, like Nadella, is also a product of the Indian eco-system.

"SiliconANGLE has confirmed that Sundar Pichai is the top choice for the CEO position of Microsoft according to sources close to the hiring team. According to sources, negotiations are in full swing with Pichai," the tech blog reported on Friday, adding that Pichai "is the leading external candidate and is in discussions with the hiring committee."

SiliconANGLE's editor, John Furrier, tweeted that talks with Pichai "are so tight under wraps" that it could explain why Pichai's name had so far not surfaced for the CEO's job. Furrier again tweeted that a second source had just confirmed that Pichai "is the dark horse coming out frontrunner". But reputed tech writer Kara Swisher, who was the first to put out Nadella's name on Friday, tweeted that her sources were clear Pichai was not in the running.

Despite the emergence of a dark horse, most Silicon Valley tech writers and pundits believe Nadella is still the frontrunner. The race cannot get bigger than this for India's technology talent: a storied global tech giant looking at two Indian-origin executives to lead the company at a time when it is losing mindshare to rivals Apple and Google and needs urgently to reinvent itself.

An alumnus of IIT-Kharagpur, with an MS from Stanford University and an MBA from Wharton, Pichai has headed various key Google divisions, from Google Chrome and Chrome OS, to overseeing development of Google Drive and apps for Gmail and Google Maps. Google added Android to his portfolio last year.

Under Pichai, Chrome has had an extraordinary run. In May 2012, Chrome became the most-used browser in the world, surpassing Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which had been the leading browser ever since it ousted Netscape from that position in the late 1990s.

Pichai's big advantage is the huge successes he's had in the consumer space of internet and mobile devices -- where Microsoft has lagged behind and needs to play serious catch-up with the likes of Google. Nadella's experience is mostly in enterprise - but his big plus is the 22 years and the variety of roles he's had in Microsoft, a sprawling giant of 100,000 people (to be 132,000 once Nokia's mobile phone business is merged) that doesn't accept outsiders in top jobs easily.

Although few mainline outlets, much less Microsoft or Pichai himself, remotely addressed the online scuttlebutt bringing Pichai into the Microsoft mix, the story sent a frisson of excitement in the fast-paced tech world, with multiple blogs reproducing the story, setting Twitter alight.

Incidentally, Pichai was in the news some months back when Twitter attempted to poach him from Google, and he was said to have been enticed back with a $50 million bonus.

Pichai, who was born in Chennai, is only 42 to Nadella's 47, and has a relatively thin resume, having joined Google only in 2004. But he has his fans in the tech world, as does Nadella.

"Microsoft could really move the ball down the field with Sundar Pichai in creating a new open operating system model for cloud, mobile, and social," SiliconAngle quoted Dave Vellante, chief analyst at Wikibon, as saying. "The market has been looking for a CEO who can balance the role of leading the enterprise transformation while keeping that consumer momentum with Xbox and reboot mobile. Pichai is the total package of technology leadership and business acumen."

Pichai and Nadella are just two among thousands of Indians who are making a difference to the global tech industry. There's a saying that in Microsoft, Google and just about every other tech company in the US, if you throw a stone, there's a very good chance you'll hit an Indian. Vinod Khosla co-founded Sun Microsystems and remains one of the biggest investors in the US. Romesh Wadhwani founded several successful tech ventures, and now runs the Symphony Technology Group, a private equity firm. Gururaj Deshpande founded Sycamore Networks and the Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation at MIT; Pradeep Sindhu, Juniper Networks; Bharat Desai, Syntel; and Padmasree Warrior is the chief technology & strategy officer at Cisco. Meanwhile, Nikesh Arora is senior VP and chief business officer at Google and Vivek Gundotra, who's called Google's Social Czar, is the man behind Google+.

Many of these names are from the IITs, as indeed are thousands of others in senior positions at US tech companies. It is estimated that around 60,000 IIT alumni currently live in the US. The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani is another institution that has played a significant role in US techdom. Sanjay Mehrotra, who co-founded SanDisk, and Preetish Nijhawan, who co-founded Akamai, are both BITS alumni.

A study by the US-based Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation found that Indians account for 33.2% of immigrant-founded engineering and technology companies started between 2006 and 2012. That number was up from 26% in 2005. "Significantly, Indians have founded more such companies than immigrants from the next top seven immigrant-founder-sending countries combined," the report said.

KOZHIKODE: Intruding into the privacy of young girls and women with mobile cameras has become a habit for some tech-savvy anti-socials. Their targets could be anywhere including buses, trains or other public places.

Though most women, fearing legal procedures, hesitate to approach the police with complaints against such individuals, the number of women who approach police with complaints has gone up considerably. According to data available with the police, nearly a dozen cases were registered in 2013 against such intrusions into privacy.

While the Kozhikode railway police officials registered 3 such cases in 2013 on complaints of railway passengers, over 10 cases were reported at various stations with the city and rural police. The actual number of incidents reported is nearly three times higher, said an official, adding that they were unable to register cases in several instances as the women show reluctance in filing a complaint.

"The accused in such cases are charged under Section 119 of the Kerala Police Act, 2011," said P Muraleedharan, sub-inspector, railway police station. Earlier, such persons were charged under Section 509 (outraging the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code, he said.

While Section 509 does not define offences such as photographing a woman without her consent, Section 119 b of the Kerala Police Act clearly says that "any person who takes photographs or records videos or propagates them at any place in a manner affecting the reasonable privacy of women, shall, on conviction, be punished with imprisonment which may extend to three years or with fine not exceeding ten thousand rupees or with both."

"Once we were at Kozhikode beach when a well-dressed person started to record our visuals. As we were a group of six women we shouted at him, which caused people to gather at the spot. They snatched his mobile and deleted the video," shared Nimmy Mathew, a staff nurse with a private hospital. When asked why she or her friends did not register a complaint with the police, Nimmy said they did not want to get caught in any legal hassles as it could probably affect their job prospects.

Many a time, private buses stop at our police station and drag out a youth who has allegedly taken a photograph of a woman/girl commuter, said a policeman with Nadakkavu police station. "Upon getting a written complaint from them, we register the FIR, he said.

Cops, however, admit that the number of girls who come forward to file written complaints is less. "Once a youngster took a snap of a girl travelling on Parasuram Express. The incident took place between Thrissur and Shoranur. Upon reaching Shoranur, the girl approached the railway police. While handing over a petition to police, the girl received a call from her father, a government official, who asked her to withdraw the complaint and avoid legal complications," said an official who did not want to be identified.

"Last week as I was travelling from Kannur to Kozhikode, I had a strong suspicion that the person sitting on the upper berth of the train was taking my pictures. But I did not complain as I was not sure of the offence," said P P Sahitha Mohan, a homemaker from Kannur. "Mobile cameras have become a nuisance and we lose our sense of security due to it," she added.

Such photographing and videographing of women with blatant disregard for their personal space is not uncommon at tourism destinations and even on streets. In separate incidents, persons spotted taking pictures of girls have been caught red-handed at Kozhikode beach, Sarovaram biopark and Moffussil bus stand premises last year.

"Not many men seem to be aware of the significance of the saying 'One's freedom ends where another person's freedom begins'," said Seena J, a resident of Cheverambalam, who is currently pursuing her PhD in Puducherry. "I really don't understand what prompts these persons to take photographs of women who are strangers to them," she said adding that in her experience, most such incidents occur on trains.

Twitter has acquired more than 900 patents from computing giant IBM, ending a dispute between the two companies, a joint announcement said Friday.
The statement said the two firms entered into a patent cross-license agreement as part of a deal giving the patents to the messaging platform.

"This acquisition of patents from IBM and licensing agreement provides us with greater intellectual property protection and gives us freedom of action to innovate on behalf of all those who use our service," said Ben Lee, legal director for Twitter.

IBM's Ken King said the agreement "illustrates the value of patented IBM inventions and demonstrates our commitment to licensing access to our broad patent portfolio."

Last year, as Twitter was preparing its anticipated public offering, it revealed that IBM was alleging that the micro-blogging service infringed on IBM patents.

Twitter said at the time it believed it had "meritorious defenses" to the allegations.

The agreement comes amid a series of legal disputes involving some of the world's biggest technology firms over patent rights, and a political debate in Washington on patent reform.

Twitter shares rose 1.2 percent to $64.28 in midday trade, while IBM fell 0.55 percent to $176.39.
Samsung's current flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4, and its compact version, the Galaxy S4 mini, will soon be available in a Black Edition, which also features black-coloured faux-leather back cover, as seen in Galaxy Note 3. The smartphones were previously only available in the dark-blue Black Mist and off-white White Frost variants.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition, and Galaxy S4 mini Black Edition, were listed briefly on Samsung's Russia site, without availability and pricing details. The new variants for the smartphones are expected to be launched globally soon however, and have already been listed on a few online Russian retailers, with a February launch date, and pricing of 23,000 rubles (roughly Rs. 40,000) for the Galaxy S4, and 16,000 rubles (roughly Rs. 28,000) for S4 mini Black Edition.

The new faux-leather back panel for the smartphones is expected to reduce the amount of fingerprints and additionally increase the grip for the devices. However, there are no changes the hardware specifications of both the devices.

While the back panel for Samsung Galaxy S4 gets a change, people have been eagerly waiting for the next version of the handset, Samsung Galaxy S5.

A new Galaxy S5 leak reveals two purported Android application package (APK) files, which appear to indicate Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S5 smartphone will equip a QHD display and fingerprint scanner.

The leak comes from popular phone tipster, @evleaks, who has tweeted the two the names of the APK files, allegedly sourced from a Galaxy S5 device, without revealing the exact functionality of the files. However, the names are quite indicative.

Rumoured specifications of the Galaxy S5 include a 2K 5-inch or 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display, boasting of a resolution of 1440x2560 pixels (QHD), and a 2900mAh battery. Further, the alleged device is said to sport a 20-megapixel rear camera with 4K video record support, an Exynos 6 (believed to be the successor of the Exynos 5 octa-core chipsets) or Snapdragon 805 processors and Android 4.4 KitKat.

New Delhi: Much have been said, heard and read about Nokia's Android phone codenamed 'Normandy' and it could soon be a reality now.

It is widely expected that the Finnish phonemaker will launch the company's first Android phone codenamed 'Normandy' on February 24 at its event. As per reports, the phone emerged on a Vietnamese website but was removed later.

In November 2013 it was reported that Nokia was working on an Android phone but gave up the plan reasons for which were never known.

According to the listing on the site, Nokia Normandy comes with a 4-inch (854x480) display and Qualcomm's 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor. It also comes with a 512MB RAM, 4GB of internal storage that can be expanded with the help of a microSD card.

The Android phone from Nokia is also reported to sport a 5-megapixel camera and support dual SIM.

However, one of the most interesting features of the phone could be that it will reportedly run on Android 4.4 KitKat, Google's latest operating system and will let users access Google Play Store.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts is rolling out a program in two of its hotels -- one in New York City's Harlem and one in Cupertino, Calif. -- that will allow customers to try a new lock system. Guests can download a mobile app that will allow them to virtually check in once they've arrived at the hotel. Then they'll be able to open their room door with the tap or wave of their smartphone instead of a plastic key card.
The app runs on Bluetooth, not NFC technology, which makes it compatible with a wide range of popular smartphones.

"Bluetooth has been making a comeback as a technology for communicating between devices at short range," Peter Crocker, founder and principal analyst at Smiths Point Analytics, told TechNewsWorld. "The Bluetooth standard has also been upgraded to Bluetooth Low Energy, so it provides the same range but does not drain the battery on smartphones or other devices."

Starwood's mobile app will run on the iPhone 4s or newer models as well as Android phones running 4.3 or newer, with the program beginning its rollout before the end of the quarter.

In addition to creating a more convenient system for travelers, the app and keyless entry system could help cut down on the waste of plastic key cards.
Keeping It Safe

Starwood's mobile app has the potential to be popular among busy and seasoned travelers, said Chetan Sharma, president of Chetan Sharma Consulting. First, though, the hotel is going to have to take steps to ensure the keyless entry's safety.

"For frequent travelers who are running short on time, it will be convenient and will be well received," Sharma told TechNewWorld.

"The issues are around security and the speed of resolution when things go wrong. There are ways to make its security more foolproof -- by having premises-based key downloads, doing a location verification using operator network at the time of authentication, better fingerprinting of the subscriber, etc.," he noted.

"They also have to ensure that the computing system at the hotel doesn't get overwhelmed by attacks or spam from outside, as well as ensuring that locks can be opened by traditional or alternate means in case of a problem like a dead battery," Sharma said.

In addition, Starwood might have to work to convince guests that a wave of the smartphone to open a door really is better than the alternative, said Smiths Point's Crocker.

"Smartphone users have not been conditioned to use their phones as replacement for credit cards, so it is just as easy to reach for your credit card as your phone," he pointed out. "This has been a real barrier to adoption of mobile payments and could translate to adoption of the keyless key. Yes, with the keyless key you don't have to check in, but this may be the only real benefit."

Widening Mobility

Starwood's efforts with mobile integration are part of a wider trend. Companies are recognizing that some of the most effective ways to drive customer interaction could be through devices, said Aaron Watkins, cofounder of Appency.

Starwood's keyless entry and the option to bypass check-in is a way of giving customers tangible benefits to downloading an app.

"Brands are starting to realize more and more that apps have to go beyond advertisements and become more functional if they are going to get the user adoption they are looking for," Watkins told TechNewsWorld.

The security and convenience barriers might stop Starwood's app from becoming widely adopted. However, if it could make the entire app -- not just the option for keyless entry -- compelling, Starwood would have a great chance to use mobility to drive user engagement long after the guest was gone, said Watkins.

"They should consider enhancing the room key app to something that provides long-term value for the user so that the app does not become something you delete as soon as your stay is over," he suggested. "By adding things like hotel reward points, concierge services and notifications about special deals, the consumer will leave the app on the phone long-term and potentially open themselves up to a two-way dialog with the brand."
