Saharanpur, UP: A Congress candidate in Uttar Pradesh, Imran Masood, has been booked for a hate speech in which he threatened to kill Narendra Modi.
Mr Masood, who is contesting from Saharanpur, was caught on camera threatening the BJP's prime ministerial candidate using words that have shocked his own party.
He has since apologized, saying, "I admit I have made a mistake, such things should not be said during elections."
In his controversial speech, Mr Masood warned Mr Modi against "turning UP into Gujarat".
He was heard saying, "I am a man of the street, ready to give my life for my people. I am neither afraid of death or of killing. He thinks this is Gujarat. There are only 4% Muslims in Gujarat. There are 42% Muslims here."
The Congress swiftly condemned the remarks, calling them wrong and unacceptable.
"Using such words to instigate people is not right," said Congress spokesperson Raj Babbar.
Varanasi in UP is one of the two constituencies from where Mr Modi is contesting next month's national election.
