The US has said that it is looking forward to welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington, but holding back from making any announcement about the possible trip in September.
“We look forward to welcoming the prime minister to Washington, nothing to announce the exact timing at this point,” state department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf told mediapersons.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accepted Barak Obama’s invitation for a visit and meeting in late September, dates are being finalized, as per officials in New Delhi.
The invitation for a meeting came during a congratulatory call to Modi by Obama after the Lok Sabha election results were out.
“A date was offered by the US for the meeting, however both the countries are working on it,” official sources said.
It is understood that Washington has offered September 30 as the date of meeting but the Indian side is trying to club the bilateral meeting with Modi’s visit to the US for the United Nations general assembly around September 26.
US secretary of state, John Kerry had communicated to S.Jaishankar, the Indian Ambassador to the US, that the US looks forward to welcome Modi to their country.
Obama was the first among the foreign leaders to call up Modi and congratulating him on becoming India’s Prime Minister.
The US President also wished that under Narendra Modi’s leadership, India will contribute significantly at the global level. Both the leaders discussed the India-US strategic partnership and the existing global economic situation.
The call was the first high-level contact between Modi and the US leadership after 2005, When Gujarat Chief Minister was denied a US visa due to his alleged complicity in the 2002 riots in the state.
